Adaptability

Flexibility and soft skills are critical in fast-paced, mission-driven organizations.

Is it better to specialize, or to generalize? I used to give out cheeky business cards describing myself as “Jack of all trades, Master’s in folklore.” As a naturally curious person, I’ve developed broad-based skills and interests which help me tell richer stories for wider audiences.

Departmental or functional silos can make it hard for colleagues to collaborate. As a content developer, I am used to becoming the point person across many teams. Training in anthropology and folklore helps me pick up occupational lingo, ask questions, and make connections. I make sure to identify and minimize points of friction.

In particular, becoming conversant in design has helped me discuss project needs with designers and take on light design tasks myself—like what you’re seeing on this site. I frequently support overworked project teams by stepping up to help with data visualization, print layout, slide decks, and web editing.
