Telling a story well means understanding the content and the audience.
After years of specialization, it can be hard for experts to relate to learners. That’s where I come in. My specialty is explaining complex ideas to non-expert audiences.
To begin, I learn as much as I can about the topic. That could mean doing research, or asking subject matter experts as many questions as I need to. If I’m already familiar with the content, I have techniques to put myself back in a learner’s shoes.
I write in an engaging, flexible style to meet your audience where they are. I take an ego-free approach to edits—it’s not my voice, it’s yours. My aim is a final piece that is engaging and accessible without sacrificing accuracy or context.
I use the same process for creating any kind of explanatory content: science communication, cultural education, technical documentation, marketing, sales enablement, training, you name it. I think of it all as translating from expert to human.
